Mirwaiz Umer detained as he defies house arrest restrictions

The alliance of key-separatist leaders-Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik- had issued "Anantnag chalo' call to the people to pay homage to more than 200 militants killed by the security forces during a tough counterinsurgency campaign and also show their solidarity with their families". "All are aware the people of south Kashmir have suffered immensely since middle of previous year and continue to bear the severe brunt of occupation."Hundreds of people mostly our youth have been killed including those in the infamous "operation all out" while even children and women are not spared". DGP, Vaid, recently said, "We are after foreign terrorists". Talking to media persons present outside his residence before his arrest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq strongly condemned the present dispensations for forcibly disallowing the March call by JRL at Anantnag.

The JRL said that the police continued to carry out "nocturnal and day-long raids" on the houses of hundreds of youth in Srinagar and Anantnag to instill "fear among the minds of people and to scuttle the plans of march".

But the security forces arrested or detained several separatist leaders and activists and also enforced security lockdown in Srinagar parts and Anantnag ahead of the long-march to foil it.

While Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest and JKLF chief Yasin Malik remains lodged in Central Jail, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is under house arrest since December 08.

Internet service which had been suspended in Anantnag and adjacent Kulgam district since on Thursday night to prevent spread of rumours on social media has been restored. The police detained Mirwaiz and he was taken to SP Hazratbal's office.

The Mirwaiz was arrested this morning for defying house arrest restrictions in Srinagar to lead a march to Anantnag. "Most of its leaders and activists succeeded and reached Anantnag", said a spokesman of Hurriyat.

The JRL said that among the measures that were taken include putting barricades around Anantnag town to turn it into "a military garrison" and snapping of "communication lines" and restrictions in Srinagar city.
