National Hockey League will consider Seattle expansion bid

Bettman also said that Seattle is the only place being considered for an expansion team at this time.

There has been no talk of when the Seattle franchise would come to be, only that it would have to pay a fee of $650 million to enter the league.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the league's board of governors agreed to consider an expansion application from Seattle.

The process will be similar to Las Vegas relocation.

Seattle could become an option for 2020-21, though there are no guarantees the league expands there, Bettman said at the board of governors meeting.

The ownership group includes David Bonderman who is a private equity CEO and Jerry Bruckheimer who is a Hollywood producer. "We will let them make a case and if they also want to try to do a study for selling season tickets, they can", Bettman said.

The announcement comes the same week the City Council approved and Mayor Jenny Durkan signed a $600 million agreement with the Los Angeles-based Oak View Group to renovate KeyArena.

Hockey is fairly popular in the Pacific Northwest, with several semi-pro teams such as the Wenatchee Wild, Tri-City Americans and Seattle Thunderbirds.

How a Seattle NHL franchise would work in terms of conference allocation or expansion draft players or even a team name has not yet been brought to the table, but the fact that Seattle has reached this point gives the city a step in the right direction of gaining a team.

Whatever the team ends calling itself, the National Hockey League appears to be heading back to the state of Washington.
