Never asked Sibal to get Ayodhya case postponed: Sunni Board

The Sunni Waqf Board said, "Yes, Kapil Sibal is our lawyer but he is also related to a political party".

Jilani also said the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which is handling the legal case along with the team of senior advocates, including Sibal, completely backs Sibal's statement in the court. The Congress party, too, had on Tuesday said that Sibal's remarks did not represent its views. Are these thoughts of delaying the hearing for elections that of the Waqf Board?

"We are glad the Congress is not seeking postponement of 2019 polls due to fear of losing them by a wide margin", he said.

"In fact, things are turning out exactly as Mr Sibal had predicted in the court. It is extremely unfortunate", he added.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred the final hearing in the long-pending Ayodhya-Ram Janambhoomi case till February 8, 2018 after a specially constituted bench sat a day before the 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition, reports said. The stakeholders in the case had moved the top court after the Allahabad High Court directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for raking up "irrelevant issues", the Congress spokesperson asked them instead to give an account of their 22-year rule in poll-bound Gujarat on the issue jobs, farmers' distress, problems of youth and reservation for Patidars. The special apex court bench is hearing a total of 14 appeals filed against the high court judgment in four civil suits.

Taking a dig at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who was described as a devotee of Lord Shiva by his party leaders, Rao wondered if the "self-deluded Shiv bhakt" had no devotion to Lord Ram. "Construction of Ram Temple is part of BJP manifesto in 2014, court should not fall into the trap", Sibal had said. "BJP is playing the role of "Manthara", said Surjewala. "Congress stand has always been clear, that Ayodhya case will be decided by SC, same has been said by the Law Minister many times", he said. BJP chief Amit Shah is trying to garner votes in the name of Lord Rama.
