Newcastle Boss Rafa Benitez Reveals Talks Over January Signings Are Already Underway

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez spoke to reporters during his pre-match press conference, ahead of his side's trip to Arsenal in the Premier League today, and delivered his verdict on the news that his players have cancelled their Christmas party, as quoted by Reuters.

Newcastle sit 16th in the Premier League and travel to Arsenal on Saturday off the back of seven defeats from their last eight games.

Whilst a possible takeover continues to dominate discussions, Benitez insists he remains focused exclusively on the role he can play as manager of the club in the lead up to the transfer window opening, business which he hopes to conduct quickly.

"They want to give a very clear message that they care and they want to do things right so they have chose to cancel their Christmas party", the former Liverpool boss told reporters.

"This group of players are working so hard, so I could not have said to them, "You do not deserve to do this or that".

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that he has already opened discussions with the club's managing director, Lee Charnley, over potential January transfer targets.

"I have told them maybe later on they could have dinner or whatever when things are going well".

"We were talking about what we want to do and players that maybe we would like to bring here, or players that maybe could go for any reason. We now have to put these names on the table and in a few days we have to try and start doing business".

"The fans know what happened in the summer, and they know what we have to do", said Benitez.

"If you're asking me for a number, no I do not have one but at least we are talking".

However, the fact that Newcastle are now in the relegation zone following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal is an additional complication.

"The main thing is to stay calm and make sure we do our jobs properly to have more chances to do well".
