Opinion poll suggests neck-n-neck contest in Gujarat

Opinion poll suggests neck-n-neck contest in Gujarat

According to the forecast, the BJP is likely to get 91-99 seats, while the Congress may get 78-86 seats in the 182-member state assembly.

A day after the civic poll results in Uttar Pradesh were declared, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday contested the notion that the BJP has "swept" the polls in the State. The latest poll, conducted between November 23 and 30, had a sample size of 3,655 people, covering 50 assembly constituencies.

BJP also scored impressive victories in Kanpur and Ghaziabad with its nominees emerging victors by a margin of over a lakh votes. The gap, however, came down to 6 percentage points in their October survey.

‪ABP-CSDS opinion poll for Gujarat has projected considerably reduced seats for the ruling BJP.

In August, as per the survey, the Congress had only 29% of the vote-share.

It states that the BJP will lead in central Gujarat with 54 per cent votes while the Congress will take the lead in north Gujarat with 49 per cent votes. It saw the grand old party making inroads in tribal areas and with traders. "A big hype has been created by the media that the BJP has bulldozed all its political rivals but the situation on the ground is exactly opposite as the top leaders of the BJP lost ground in urban local body elections", said the SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav on Tuesday.

As per the survey, in October the BJP had a lead of four points among traders; however, the latest survey shows this has been almost reversed, with the Congress now getting 43% votes among the trading community, as opposed to the BJP at 40%.

BJP on the other hand, is not only confident of winning the polls but also of increasing the vote share gap.

‪In the 182-seat Gujarat assembly, BJP now has 117 MLAS while Congress has 59.
