Osmania University Students Protest After Student Hangs Himself in Hostel

A first year MSc Physics student studying at Hyderabad's Osmania University allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Sunday. Large number of students of the University came out in protest, after which, on Monday, the police cracked down and arrested over a hundred of them from campus premises. "Therefore, I have made a decision to end my life", Murali wrote in his suicide note, according to The Times of India report.

The students had refused to hand over the body of Murali, who, in a suicide note had apologised to his mother for his extreme decision and said he was unable to cope with exams.

In a press release here on Monday, ABVP secretary, Ayyappa demanded an immediate action on students issues and said that State government is responsible for his suicide. I never wanted to fail in exams. The police arrested 22 students on Monday, charging them with violence on campus.

Devender Reddy, a senior journalist with a regional channel, and video journalist Praveen, who were there to cover the suicide incident, were also detained by the police on Sunday night. In the gathering of thousands of youth and students, condolences to Murali were paid.

Students of Osmania University have been at the forefront in the movement for the formation of separate Telangana state.

However, his fellow students and some political activists claimed Murali had committed suicide because the Telangana government was delaying the issuance of a notification for government jobs. Shouting "KCR down, down", students burnt effigy of the chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in front of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad.

The students at the university have been protesting within the campus since Saturday, demanding - among other things - compensation and a government job for a member of the family of the deceased student.
