Paul Scholes: What makes Luke Shaw Man United's best left-back

Paul Scholes: What makes Luke Shaw Man United's best left-back

Before the game kicked-off, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard questioned Shaw's professionalism and asked why a player of such obvious talent has not been used more often by Mourinho.

The game also marked his first Champions League appearance since his horrific leg break in Eindhoven in September 2015.

The England worldwide has been largely out-of-favour since Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford from ex-Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal in May 2016.

Reports last week claimed Mourinho has prioritised signing a new left-back in the winter transfer window and that the unsettled Rose was his primary target.

Yet, Shaw showed on Tuesday night that it would be foolish to write him off just yet, and he could still become an excellent player.

The 22-year-old put in the type of performance United fans had expected to see when he joined the club from Southampton for £30m in 2014.

On Saturday Ashley Young played as a full-back, and while the former Aston Villa man has been superb in the role and deservedly was nominated for the November Player of the Month award.

But with the Manchester derby against Premier League title rivals City at Old Trafford this Sunday, Mourinho opted to wrap Rojo in cotton wool and play Danny Blind in defence instead.

United turned the game around with two goals in two minutes from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in the second half to progress to the last 16 as Group A winners.

"We had Rooney, who was a player if he missed a couple of games you knew, he wasn't looking after himself".

Shaw has found opportunities very hard to come by at United under Mourinho, who has publicly criticised the defender previously.

"A very positive performance, especially with the balls going forward".

"He was deserving that opportunity for a long time and is going to get more because his performance was really positive", added the Portuguese.

Should United persevere with Luke Shaw?
