Possible info breach affects 374000 Duke Energy customers, officials say

More than 370,000 Duke Energy customers may have had their information hacked.

"This is a TIO issue that has possibly and unfortunately affected our customers", Mosier said.

PayPal-owned payment processing provider TIO Networks says the personal details of as many as 1.6 million people could have been compromised.

The announcement came from PayPal, officials said, who recently acquired TIO networks.

Meanwhile PayPal assured: "The PayPal platform is not impacted in any way, as the TIO systems are completely separate from the PayPal network, and PayPal's customers' data remains secure". PayPal said it was looking into the vulnerabilities at TIO and discovered that users' information may have been compromised. It added that TIO's services "will not be fully restored until we are confident in the security of the TIO systems and network".

"This suspension of services is a result of PayPal's discovery of security vulnerabilities on the TIO platform and issues with TIO's data security programme that do not adhere to PayPal's information security standards", said PayPal in November.

Following PayPal's purchase of the Canadian company - which runs a network of over 60,000 utility and bills payment kiosks across North America - it found evidence of unauthorized access to TIO's networks and hence suspended TIO's operations.

PayPal brought in "additional third-party cybersecurity expertise to review TIO's bill payment platform", TIO continued.

PayPal has also promised to offer free credit monitoring memberships to all affected customers of TIO Networks, aside from working with all companies that the latter serves to identify and notify affected customers.
