"The likelihood of snow will increase in the evening and night as temperatures falls to between -2C and 1C", said Met Éirean.

The high temperature Tuesday will be in the upper 50s, but that will be drop to the mid-40s on Wednesday and Thursday and about 40 degrees on Friday, the weather service said.

Before the cold arrives, however, widespread rain showers are expected on Tuesday followed by lake effect snow showers and periodic light snow into the second half of the week.

"Rain will clear on Thursday then turning much colder from the north with blustery showers developing".

The forecast indicates the high to be near 34.

"There are chances of snow towards the end of the week, but we're talking about a 30 percent chance or less", he said.


Tuesday night - Mostly clear, with a low around 47. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

High temperatures are expected in the low 20s through Friday, and lows could dip into the single digits overnight Wednesday. Highest temperatures of just 3 to 6 degrees with moderate to fresh north to northwest winds.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Mead says an arctic blast is coming and it will be here for a while. Expect a high of 55 and a low around 41.

Friday's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high of 54 and an overnight low of 28.

"By Friday the United Kingdom will be in an Arctic Maritime air mass with temperatures across the country staying in low single figures by day and below freezing by night".

There's a 30 percent chance of snow Saturday, which otherwise will be sunny with a high near 39 degrees, the NWS said.
