UFC president Dana White installed a clause in St-Pierre's contract upon his return, mandating that if he beat Bisping for the title, he must defend it. St-Pierre notably avoided questions about defending the title in the immediate afterglow of winning the title in November.

"If you're sick you're sick, but the fact is, you don't want to fight in the division", Rockhold said. "I will be giving up my belt and once I'm healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what's next in my career".

If the bout is signed, it will happen one day after Georges St-Pierre relayed he likely will not defend the middleweight title he won last month.

He added regarding his contracting ulcerative colitis, which he believes was related to his moving up in weight classes, "I did what I did; I learned from my mistakes".

These comments essentially echo St-Pierre's previous statements regarding his future atop the middleweight division.

Whittaker (19-4-0) may be making the first defense of his interim title, which was won by decision over Yoel Romero at UFC 213.

Helwani reported that it was unclear as to whether Whittaker v Rockhold would be for the interim or official championship.

The UFC announced St-Pierre (26-2) had vacated the title on Thursday.

The UFC 221 pay-per-view event will take place at Perth Arena.

Rockhold is a previous holder of the title having won it at UFC 194 against Chris Weidman before losing it at UFC 199 to Michael Bisping.

The latest comments from GSP - who has revealed that he is now suffering from colitis, an inflammation of the colon which causes abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhoea - are likely to anger UFC president Dana White. Rockhold faced top Middleweight and former World Series of Fighting Middleweight and Light Heavyweight champion, David Branch.
