Will play role for fostering Pak-UK ties, London mayor assures PM

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has become the first Western politician of his generation to make the journey between India and Pakistan on foot at the Wagah border crossing.

The mayor, whose family originated in India but moved to Pakistan after partition, described it as an emotional journey, retracing his grandparents' steps.

The Mayor was received by Lahore Mayor Colonel (retd) Mubashir and Lahore Commissioner at the border.

Khan, earlier in the day, visited Golden Temple in Punjab. He said that successful counter-terrorism efforts have made Pakistan an opportune destination for British businesses.

The London mayor was also briefed about the investment opportunities for trade and investment in the country. The government, in collaboration with the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, had already introduced far-reaching reforms in education, healthcare and skills development sectors.

PM Abbasi welcomed him and said that every Pakistani is proud of his election as Mayor of London and prays for his success.

"But it's good to be in Pakistan", Khan added with a grin.

Speaking at a dinner reception given by the mayor of Lahore, Mr Khan said he was impressed by the hospitality of the people of Lahore. "I found Lahore as I had heard of it. It is the heart of Pakistan and is certainly the hub of Pakistani culture", Khan is quoted to have said. On this occasion, Zafar equated London with Lahore vis-à-vis socio-cultural openness.
