76 immigrants found in Laredo tractor-trailer

Border Patrol agents have reported an increase in the use of tractor trailers, a unsafe smuggling method, to transport immigrants.

Both are being held in federal custody. Border Patrol inspected the truck and found 76 undocumented immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Agents at the north Highway 83 Border Patrol checkpoint rescued 76 undocumented immigrants from a tractor-trailer last week.

The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle admitted to performing scouting duties for a smuggling crew.

Authorities found the immigrants inside the trailer while the rig underwent further inspection.

After interviews were conducted, Border Patrol was not successful at learning who owned the drugs.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nina Pruneda says the driver's identity and other details about the case are being withheld at this time.

13-people in the group were said to be unaccompanied minors.

"Both the driver and his cousin admitted their involvement with human smuggling in the area", said the agency.

The man is now being held in Department of Homeland Security custody.

His view of how to deal with "Dreamers", the young people brought to the United States illegally but protected by an Obama-era order, is being watched carefully.
