Bears hire Helfrich as offensive coordinator

Fangio, who helped transform the Bears' defense from one of the worst in the NFL and into one of the league's best, will reportedly remain on the staff of new head coach Matt Nagy as he assembled his team in Chicago.

But the move to professional football comes after Helfrich spent the 2017 season as a college football television analyst for Fox Sports, a position which he accepted after being fired from Oregon's head coaching position in November of 2016. Subscribe on Apple podcasts or Stitcher Radio.

The Bears have retained defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

In his introductory press conference, Nagy said he and Fangio had spoken about retaining him. His coaching staff seems likely to take shape fairly quickly, and on Thursday morning ESPN's Adam Schefter reported former OR head coach Mike Helfrich is coming aboard as offensive coordinator. By no means did that close off all options for Fangio.

McCarthy and the Packers went in a different direction, choosing instead to hire former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine after an interview Tuesday. The defense finished this season ranked seventh against the pass, ninth in points allowed, 10th in total defense, 11th against the run and tied for 13th with 22 takeaways.

But the Bears presented a chance for Fangio to continue building what he has worked on the last three years.

After Kelly left, Helfrich became the head coach and reached the National Championship Game in 2013 with Marcus Mariota. Injuries have consistently exposed a lack of depth, and Pace's record in free agency has so far been shaky in trying to replace talented players such as receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, tight end Martellus Bennett and kicker Robbie Gould. This situation offers Fangio more autonomy running the defense than he had under John Fox.

The Bears have had a busy week of hires this week, bringing in Mark Helfrich as their offensive coordinator and Chris Tabor as their special teams coordinator.
