Bruised heel forces Steyn out of Test and series

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the ongoing Test against India is set to miss the remainder of the series as well.

"During Dale's 18th over‚ in his delivery stride‚ he landed awkwardly in the footholes and this caused a significant strain to the foot‚ leading to tissue damage on the underside of the foot in the heel area‚" South Africa's team manager and doctor‚ Mohammed Moosajee‚ said. According to espncricinfo, he may not bowl again in this Test.

Steyn appeared to have made a successful return, taking 2-51 in India's first innings to improve his career total to 419 wickets in 86 tests. When Steyn was bowling his 18th over, he sustained serious tissue damage to his left heel.

The fast bowling pair of Duanne Olivier and uncapped Lungi Ngidi has been added to the 14-member South Africa squad for the second Test against India, beginning January 13 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. After that Steyn went for scans where the extent of his injury was revealed.

The report also states that Steyn could be even out for 4-6 weeks, and possibly out of series.

Steyn, who is 10th on the list of all-time wicket-takers in test matches, was playing a test for the first time since breaking down with a right-shoulder injury in Australia in November 2016. Now he will not play in this match.
