Cameron White recalled to Australian ODI squad

Cameron White recalled to Australian ODI squad

White's return to the ODI squad comes almost three years after his last global appearance for Australia, during the triangular series played along with England and India.

Glenn Maxwell has again been overlooked by Australian selectors for the upcoming one-day global series against England, with veteran all-rounder Cameron White a surprise choice to replace the injured Chris Lynn.

Chief selector Trevor Hohns had high praises for White and insisted that his present form has earned him the recall.

"In the back of my mind I never really gave up all hope".

The selectors, led by Trevor Hohns, also chose to rest paceman Josh Hazlewood from the opening ODI while fellow pacer Pat Cummins will skip the second game as Australia look to manage the workload of their fast bowlers ahead of the Test tour of South Africa.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity and it's up to me to make the most of it".

White suggested at the time that the Australian side was being treated as a "development team". However, White's selection came as a surprise as the veteran himself thought that his global career was nearly over.

Their relationship seems to have improved, with Hohns explaining White's Big Bash League (BBL) form had been impossible to overlook.

"He's in very good form as his figures demonstrate, he's playing very well", Hohns said.

"He ticks all the boxes for what we need at this stage", he added.

But he conceded on Thursday that his 285 runs at a strike rate of 116 had gone a long way towards cementing his ODI recall. Hopefully I can. Making a few runs in the Big Bash hasn't hurt.

Smith took aim at Maxwell, saying that he needed to "train a little bit smarter" and cut out all the "funky stuff".

With the selectors revealing that they want to put together a core group of players ahead of the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales, Maxwell will no doubt be aware that the clock is ticking.
