CES 2018: Power outage at tech's biggest trade show

The CES 2018 event experienced a blackout Wednesday, putting one of the world's largest displays of tech and electronic devices at a standstill for almost two hours.

But the tech with perhaps the most potential and anticipation will not even launch here for a year or more, 5G wireless internet. Initially, some folks seemed on edge-especially given past events in Las Vegas-but so far it just seems that the trade show finally succeeded in overloading the Las Vegas power grid. "We are working hard to resolve this and appreciate your patience". We are opening Central Hall.

Exhibitors have not yet put forward any complaints concerning damages caused by the power outage, nor has the show organizer officially mentioned a plan regarding the mishap. And the more socially conscious pointed out the hypocrisy of being bent out of shape over a brief blackout at CES when an entire territory of the United States has been without power for months...

Update: Things appear to have gone from bad to worse. My colleague @jeffersongraham is inside South Hall here and says there is still power. So maybe Google's outdoor booth wasn't an entirely awful idea, after all. This resulted in attendees getting led out of the affected areas until power could be restored.

(2:13PM PT) According to the CTA, the culprit was, in fact, the rain. Nevada Energy is "in the process of testing and restoring power".

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", said the Consumer Technology Association in a statement, an organization that holds the annual CES.

At around 11.15am local time there was a power surge noticed in the North Hall of the LVCC and at the same time power went out in the main Central Hall.
