Chris Matthews Apologizes For "Bill Cosby Pill" Joke

Chris Matthews Apologizes For

The clip was shot in 2016 in the midst of the Democratic primary election, just before Matthews was set to interview Clinton in a fire station in Iowa; a fire truck is prominently visible behind them.

Before interviewing the candidate, Matthews made a comment about giving her a "Bill Cosby pill".

Cosby has been accused by scores of women of sexual assault - often with the use of date-rape pills.

New York Magazine contacted Matthews after acquiring the clip, and he apologized, reportedly telling them the joke was "a awful comment [he] made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines". "I realize that's no excuse". A 10-year-old Jezebel post noted the many disparaging terms he'd aimed at her ― from "she devil" and "Nurse Ratched" to "witchy", "anti-male" and "uppity". "I deeply regret it and I'm sorry", he said. He once pinched her cheek after an interview, and, in 2008 said, "the reason she's a US senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around".

Last month, the Daily Caller reported MSNBC paid $40,000 in 1999 to a producer on Matthews' show to settle sexual harassment allegations against him. The payment was intended as a settlement, though some sources disputed the number, saying it was lower and part of a severance package. The network said his comments were inappropriate but not meant to be taken as propositions. MSNBC declined to comment on whether the employee left because of Matthews or whether this was the only claim in Matthews' history at the company. "Precious waters?" Matthews was seemingly referring to Clinton.

Still, Matthews has long shown that he has no love for Clinton.
