'Detective Pikachu' (3DS) Gets Release Date - Trailer

The move marks another step in the recent resurgence of Pokemon that began with Pokemon Go's release in 2016.

In addition to the launch of the Nintendo 2DS XL Pikachu Edition in the U.S., the Big N has also reiterated a previous announcement that it will be releasing the Game Boy Color title Pokemon Crystal in the Nintendo eShop on the same date, January 26, 2018 for $10. The goal of the game is to help out a boy named Tim find his father. Sometimes they give out hints, but most of the time they are just Pikachu up to his usual antics. Perhaps it's no surprise the game which inspired the film is finally being released in the West. Tim, along with a talkative, coffee-loving Pikachu, solve mysteries in Ryme City. In addition to all the content from the previous game, the West is also getting further content that rounds out the story.

A special limited-edition oversized amiibo of Detective Pikachu will also be released at launch. Except, y'know, starring a surly detective-hat-wearing Pikachu who talks in full sentences. The amiibo allows players to view all of the "Pika Prompts" cutscenes from chapters they've completed.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL Pikachu Edition will hit the US - it was released in Japan late previous year - on January 26. Featuring a speaking role for the ever popular Pokemon, the game represents a very unique spinoff.

Detective Pikachu comes to a 3DS near you on March 23. The movie is to star Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) as Lucy, and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Tim Goodman.
