England to face Nigeria and Costa Rica in World Cup warm-ups

And with England due to face World Cup debutants Panama in their second Group G game on June 24, manager Southgate has secured a friendly against the Costa Ricans at Leeds United's Elland Road stadium on June 7.

"We're going into a World Cup where we will play African and Central American opposition", Southgate said.

England will face the Super Eagles and Costa Rica friendlies leading up to the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup, the Football Association are set to confirm.

Southgate's side have also scheduled March friendlies against Netherlands and Italy, both of whom failed to qualify for the World Cup finals.

This is fantastic news for the people Yorkshire, who will have the chance to see England's national team play on their own doorstep at Leeds United's Elland Road for the first time since 2002.

Taking home games on the road away from Wembley is something England did in the build-up to Euro 2016, playing matches at Sunderland's Stadium of Light and Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

"We have a huge following in Yorkshire with large numbers of our members and travelling support coming from that area".

England - whose best World Cup performance since the winning the tournament in 1966 was a semi-final penalty shootout loss to West Germany in 1990 - already have Netherlands and Italy, two giants of the world game who failed to qualify for Russian Federation lined-up for friendlies in March.
