Freezing rain, snow, wintry mix in today's forecast

The Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory west of a line from St. James to the Twin Cities metro and Balsam Lake.

Low temperatures, fierce snow and ice storms will buffet large areas of the Tennessee Valley, the Ohio Valley and the Northeast as Winter Storm Hunter moves east through Friday and Saturday. "An additional 1" to 3" may accumulate on top of the glaze of ice.

Colder air into the afternoon Friday will cause rain to change to freezing rain, sleet or a mix of everything in the afternoon.

Officially, the storm warning goes into effect at 4 p.m. on Friday and continues through 10 a.m. on Saturday.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.

EAST AR: More sleet and ice than snow. Humidity begins to return at night.

Heavy, mixed precipitation including sleet and heavy, wet snow will fall within that time making travel very hard to almost impossible at times. Most of the precipitation will turn over to snow showers by 8 a.m. EST.

A potent winter storm will bring rain, ice and snow to portions of the southern and eastern United States over the next two days, which will be followed by another ferocious blast of bitterly cold Arctic air.

Today, the sun will rise at 7:54:31 a.m. and set at 5:23:43 p.m.

Rain that began in the morning Thursday will be on and off through the morning and be more steady as a cold front moves toward the region. The storm is expected to touch down on January 10, and will bring massive winds, heavy blizzards, and freezing rain, according to The Weather Channel. By 4pm, the average area temperature will be 4 degrees, but the wind chill could drop to -20 with northwest winds gusting to 31 miles per hour. Coupled with high winds, travel could become extremely risky if not impossible.

Friday night: A 20 percent chance of snow before midnight.

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 27. There is still some uncertainty on how much and where the heaviest snow will fall.
