Hamas Official Targeted in Car Explosion in South Lebanon

A bomb blast wounded a member of the Palestinian group Hamas in the Lebanese city of Sidon today, destroying his vehicle as he was about to enter it.

"Hamdan is an official in Hamas's security service".

Hamas leader Jihad Taha blamed Israel for the attack.

"Initial indications point to Zionist [Israeli] fingers behind this criminal act", Hamas said without further details.

"A bomb placed in a BMW in Sidon detonated, wounding Hamas official [Abu Hamza] Hamdan", a military source said.

Security forces sealed off the site of the explosion in a northern residential district of the city, 40km south of Beirut, and firefighters arrived to put out the flames.

The statement added that the blast took place as he opened his vehicle in Al-Bustan Al-Kabir neighborhood in Sidon.

Medical sources reported that he sustained serious injuries to his legs.

The group has previously accused Israel of being involved in the assassination of a number of its members inside and outside Palestine.
