Indian Engineer Kidnapped, Forced To Marry At Gunpoint

A 29-year-old engineer was reportedly abducted and forced to marry a woman at gunpoint in Bihar.

The incident came to light after a video clipping of the alleged 'Pakadua Vivah (forced marriage)' went viral on the social media.

He told News18, "My brother boarded Hatia-Patna express from Bokaro as he had to attend a wedding function near Patna on December 3".

The incident happened after Kumar met with one of the bride's relatives at a different wedding.

Kumar initially wasn't cooperating with the forced nuptials but several members of the bride-to-be's family intermittently put guns to his head until the ceremony was over.

Ever since the incident, Vinod's family has been getting threat calls asking him to accept the girl forcing them to seek police protection.

In the video, Kumar can be seen crying and begging for his release as group of women allegedly force him to perform marriage rituals. The forced marriage practice, Pakadua Vivah, is a tradition specific to the Bihar region and is typically performed by poor families seeking a suitable groom who can not afford a dowry, NDTV reports. Surendra Yadav, the woman's brother, persuaded him to come to Mokama. He was thrashed and forced to apply vermillion on bride's head.

"After my forced marriage, the girl's family members kept me inside a room whole night".

One can also see, a women wiping of Vinod's tears with her shawl.

"The girl's brother had called me last month".

Pandarak police station in charge Prabhakar Vishwakarma has denied the allegations.

Lalan Mohan Prasad, a local officer, told AFP police had contacted Kumar and offered their help but he had not formally complained.

The Patna city SP Amarkesh said, "We are investigating the matter".

The victim told the Times of India that Yadav befriended him past year and in December expressed his desire to meet him. The districts notorious for such forced marriages include Begusarai, Patna, Lakhisarai, Munger, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nawada, Sheikhpura and Arwal. "We are looking into it and will take action against the culprits".
