Israel targets "terror infrastructure" in Gaza: Army

Israel targets

"The Hamas terror organisation is accountable for all activity in and from the Gaza Strip", it said.

The target struck was a tunnel that passed below the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Similar clashes took place in 17 different locations within the West Bank, the IDF said, while also continuing efforts to catch the perpetrators of a terrorist attack which killed Rabbi Raziel Shevach on a West Bank road last Tuesday.

"We understand this tunnel belongs to Hamas", Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told reporters early Sunday morning, saying the military believed the terror group saw it as a "significant asset". In addition, it could have been used as an attack tunnel to carry out a serious terror attack on the border crossing from the Egyptian side. It had been studied and investigated until it was neutralized early Sunday morning. The IDF called the tunnel, which stretched from Gaza to Egypt, a "severe breach of Israel's sovereignty".

According to reports, the IDF was made aware of the tunnel a few weeks ago after it was detected by the army's advanced technology.

On December 14, following multiple rocket attacks from Gaza, Israel also shut down the Kerem Shalom Crossing, along with the Erez Crossing, through which people enter and exit the Strip. The destruction of the terror tunnel network is an essential component of our systematic policy to harm Hamas's strategic capabilities.

The military said that it does not intend to bring about an escalation of the situation, but will continue to act against any violation of Israeli sovereignty.

On Saturday, the Defense Ministry's chief liaison to the Palestinians warned residents of the Gaza Strip that the Hamas terror organization was using them in its quest for violence against Israel.

The tunnel, which was constructed in Gaza, began in the city of Rafah and crossed into Israel under the Kerem Shalom Crossing, through which hundreds of trucks ordinarily cross into the coastal enclave each day, he added.
