Linden Sam's Club is one of 63 to close

News of the closings came on the same day Walmart announced it would be boosting starting salaries for employees and giving bonuses after the passage of the new tax law in Washington D.C.

A spokesperson for the retail store says some of the closed stores could be converted into E-Commerce facilities to fulfill more online orders and keep pace with internet retailers.

Though numerous employees at the New Caney location were fairly new as the store opened just a year ago, Hatfield said some employees may still qualify for Walmart's new bonus system, which is based on length of service. "Closing clubs is never easy and we're committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition".

Walmart and Sam's Club now operate more than 5,400 locations across the U.S. After the reduction, there will be 597 Sam's Club stores.

At Sam's Club, digital sales are up 27 percent in the first half of the 2018 fiscal year. "This is a decision we made based on what we need to do to maintain a healthy business going forward".

According to the Journal, the job cuts, which are expected to focus on workers in various roles at the company's Arkansas headquarters, are expected to be completed by the end of the company's fiscal year on January 31.

During an October meeting, Sam's Club CEO John Furner said the retailer needed to improve its competitive position.

The Sam's Club location at 12919 San Pedro Ave.in San Antonio. The store wasn't underperforming, Hatfield said, but the company chose to close the location as part of a review regarding the "right mix of clubs" and emphasis on e-commerce under CEO John Furner.

Local news reports said Sam's Clubs stores were closing in Texas, California, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana and Alaska, among other states.

The store will reopen Friday before permanently closing in two weeks.

"Right now that's what the customer wants", she said.
