Local Events Happening Monday In Honor Of Martin Luther King Day

Monday is a national holiday, a day set aside to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The longtime Las Vegas resident said she has watched the celebration evolve over the past three decades from a small parade into a week of public service and education in King's honor.

Monday is a holiday for many across the nation in recognition of King, who was assassinated on April 4, 1968 on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. "So I stuck out my hand as Dr. King came through the door, and I was mesmerized, of course, seeing him". Milton said Chelle Luper Wilson, the daughter of late Oklahoma City civil rights activist Clara Luper, will be keynote speaker, while Midwest City Councilwoman Christine Price Allen will serve as emcee. Scott Thurmond, executive director for Friends of the Mission, said this will be the fifth year Fourth & Hope and Friends of the Mission have invited people to participate in the national day of service. "I saw it daily, and I knew it was wrong".

The March on Washington and King's speech helped develop and lead to passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.


This year is also the 50th anniversary of King's assassination and the event will also include a special exhibit featuring mementos and press clippings from the personal files of members of the steering committee.

"And in the end I sat stunned", Ingalls said of hearing King's message. "But the key is to fight back with love and in a way that comes from love".

A key goal of Saturday's event involved emphasizing how the lessons espoused by King continue to be exemplified by the lives of folks in Surry County.

Wilkes-Barre City Hall will be closed on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Holiday Coalition and center around honoring the memory of King and the civil rights movement, as well as offering opportunities for community involvement.
