Mathews, Chandimal in ODI captaincy frame

Ironically, his appointment comes just six months after he had stepped down from the helm (in July) when Sri Lanka had suffered a miserable (3-2) series loss against Zimbabwe.

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been reinstated as the skipper for the Sri Lankan ODI team on Tuesday.

Former captain Angelo Mathews, who stepped down after Sri Lanka's disastrous ODI defeat against Zimbabwe, was reappointed as ODI and Twenty20 captain at a special media conference held at the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) headquarters in Colombo, a short while ago today (9). SLC President, Head Coach and the selectors wanted me to reconsider my decision. "I invited Angelo to reconsider and accept the captaincy once again, further to the lengthy discussions I had with the head coach, selectors and the management of the SLC", added Sumathipala.

"I took a few a few days to think about it, and because of a few reasons I chose to accept it".

"I have known Hathu [Hathurasingha] for a long time". As well as Mathews and Chandimal, veteran spinner Rangana Herath deputised for Chandimal in several Tests. He's not here just to survive. Cricket has given me a lot. If I turn my back in the hour of need I'll not have done right by cricket, " cricinfo quoted him saying. In addition to Perera, Upul Tharanga has also captained the side over the previous year, but tasted very little success. "When we go to the next World Cup, we'll need about seven or eight fast bowlers who have played at least 15 ODIs each".

Mr. Sumathipala said, when he entered the fray, ICC has only allocated US$ 80 million for the members during its paying cycle, but with the efforts he made to strengthen the relationship with other members yielded a collaborative effort to increase it to US$ 120 million, thus raising the SLCs revenue drastically. Mathews will take the reigns of the team in the upcoming tri-nation One Day International tournament in Bangladesh.
