MEA confirms India-Pak NSA talks; says focus was on terror

The Government feels that though terror and talks (Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue) can not go together, it will not mind discussing issues pertaining to terrorism through various mechanisms. "I agree that talks took place", MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told reporters at a press conference.

Pakistan's handling of terrorists, with 26/11 terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed being freed from police custody and attempting to join mainstream politics, and Lashkar-e-Taiba operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi remaining out on bail, is also assumed to have figured in the conversation. This will take the wind out of Pakistan's attempts to blame India on worldwide platforms for avoiding talks to de-escalate border tension.

"Similarly, the NSA-level engagement is part of the operational-level talks". "Talks and terror cannot go together but talks on terror can go ahead", externalaffairs ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said. He said India used the opportunity to raise the issue of cross border terrorism, infiltration and safe sanctuaries for terrorists along the border with Pakistan. "We have said terror and talks cannot go together, but talks on terror can definitely go ahead". The meeting between Pakistan's NSA retired Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua and Ajit Doval reportedly took place on December 27 in Thailand. "Some of these meetings are pre-determined".

"Their (Russia's and America's) support has ensured that (the) FATF, at its plenary meeting on November 2, 2017, called upon Pakistan to report on the action being taken to curb terror financing, especially in respect of the proscribed entities and individuals", the ministry of external affairs (MEA) wrote to a parliamentary panel recently.

The two women were humiliated and harassed by Pakistani diplomats and the media.

Past year too, there was no movement on India-Pakistan talks though in December, The Indian Express reported that Doval had met his counterpart in Thailand.

It was not the first meeting between the two NSAs in a third country. "Likewise, talks between NSAs is a part of operational level talks".
