New Aadhaar Virtual ID To Disclose Only Selective Information As Required

Virtual ID will therefore not attack the root of the problem. "I don't know anything", Divan, who has been leading the arguments in the apex court against the 12-digit Aadhaar number, said. Hence, at a given moment, only 1 Aadhaar and 1 Virtual ID can exist for any person.

How is it safer than handing out one's Aadhaar number?

The Aadhaar debate just doesn't seem to settle anytime soon. It will be revocable number mapped with your Aadhaar number.

Putting up a robust defence of the ambitious scheme of providing a 12-digit unique identity number to the citizens of the country, Union Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said finger print and iris data stored in the Aadhaar system are safe and secure and can not be breached even by "billions of efforts". Currently, the five details including name, date of birth, photo, address and mobile number are shared with the service provider at the time of authentication. The circular notes that VID, by design being temporary, can not be used by agencies for de-duplication.

Aadhaar number holder can use VID in lieu of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or KYC services are performed.Authentication may be performed using VID in a manner similar to using Aadhaar number. Moreover, this is further corroborated by UIDAI's own recent tweet cautioning users to "delete" Aadhaar downloaded at public internet cafes or via non-private systems, something that came in the aftermath of The Tribune exposé. It can only be generated, replaced or revoked by the Aadhaar number holder from time to time. Local AUAs will only have access to limited KYC details and be prohibited from storing Aadhaar numbers.

It's basically like using your VID as your Aadhaar number - but only for a temporary period, after which a new one will have to be generated. "You may still have to give your Aadhaar ID to certain service providers, and that continues to put your data at risk", he argues.

This does not, however, mean that the earlier security system allowed profiling, but privacy concerns were raised because "may be at some later day, somebody may start linking Aadhaar number with various databases and then some profiling could be done", he added.

"All AUAs who are not categorized under 'Global AUAs" will automatically be categorized as "Local AUAs".

When will the limited KYC and UID Tokens be in place? "It will not be possible to locate an individual's Aadhaar number by using the Virtual ID", an official said. "Ans NO. Similarly why re-authenticate the Aadhar number everytime it is used (sic)", Tewari said.

At press time, a certified copy of the UIDAI order was not available with ET. In order to tell the masses that their personal information is safe, secure and can not be breached, the UIDAI introduced Virtual IDs. Any non-compliance will invite action in the form of financial disincentives and termination of the said Agreement.

UIDAI has been under the scanner over the past few months over reports of access to personal information by random entities without the consent of individual Aadhaar holders. For Rs. 500 or around US$8.
