Pokemon GO Community Day Jan 2018: Special Surf Pikachu

Players will have a limited window of time to catch this Pokemon that will have an exclusive move.

Earlier today, Pokemon Go announced 'Pokemon Go Community Day, ' a new event series that will take place every month. Niantic announced that these events will feature a "special Pokemon" that'll only be available during that time, on that special day. Stay tuned to our social media channels and check out the Pokémon GO Community Day event page each month to learn about that month's featured Pokémon, special bonuses, and event times.

The first Pokemon Go Community Event will take place on January 20th and will give players to catch a Pikachu that knows the move Surf. "Pokémon GO Community Day is an opportunity for Trainers around the world to meet up at their local parks to make new friends and experience what it means to be a part of this special community".

Niantic said this first event will include Double XP for the duration of the day as well as Lures that last 3 hours each.


Pokemon Go will likely never reach the same peaks that it hit in 2016, but it's nice to see Niantic scheduling more events for a game that desperately needs them.

Check out the full post on the Pokemon Go site. It's possible that Pokemon Go will limiting Surfing Pikachu spawns to areas designated as a park in the OpenStreetsMap database.

One good reason for Trainers to join the event is that the special Pokemon will come with an exclusive move.

Community Day is created to engage the massive worldwide Pokemon Go community and keep them involved in the game by offering special Pokemon for a short period of time. It seems pretty cool, and hopefully will be big enough in major cities to bring back the initial vibe of Pokemon GO, where loads of people would just be out milling about and very obviously playing the game.
