Providence Police Announce Arrest in Providence Place Mall Shooting

Monday afternoon's shooting at Providence Place Mall that triggered an active shooting warning was tied to gang activity according to multiple Police sources.

Authorities said a 19-year-old man was shot on a second-floor parking garage and suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with a shooting at a Rhode Island mall that left one person injured.

The mall was evacuated around 4:50 p.m., forcing shoppers into the cold.

The boy appeared for arraignment before a Family Court judge and was ordered released on home confinement.

Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements confirmed with Eyewitness News the suspect was initially taken to the Rhode Island Training School following his arrest. The weapon hasn't been recovered and more arrests are possible.

Police said two groups of teenagers got into a fight near a store before making their way to the parking garage.

McKenna Moors, 18, told the Globe shortly after the incident that she had been celebrating a friend's birthday at the Cheesecake Factory at the mall when the shooting occurred.
