Recently hired Ken Norton Jr

Norton was hired just a week ago by the 49ers, a team he starred for at linebacker, to be their assistant head coach.

The Seahawks' coordinator position opened last week when Seattle parted ways with Kris Richard.

Norton Jr. joined the 49ers after serving two and a half seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders.

UPDATE 5:51 p.m. ET: Alex Rozier of KING in Seattle reports that Norton's wife says her husband signed a three-year deal with the Seahawks.

This means the Seahawks are turning over the offensive and defensive coordinator jobs. It's a major move for coach Pete Carroll, who clearly wasn't happy that his team went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.

NFL Network's Mike Garofalo also reported the Seahawks were likely to reach out to Norton for the job.

"Last week, Ken was presented with an opportunity to once again coordinate a defense", Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the announcement, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Before joining San Francisco as a free agent, Norton Jr. played for the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the second round out of UCLA in 1988.

Ken Norton Jr. finished his playing career with the 49ers in 2000. "Because of how we feel about Ken as a coach, we understand and respect his desire to pursue the position". Norton followed Carroll to Seattle and was the Seahawks linebackers coach from 2010 to 2014. However, he took all of the heat for a defense that was tied for last place in sacks with 14 and dead last in the National Football League in takeaways with six after 10 games in 2017, being in fired in favor of assistant head coach-defense John Pagano.

The hirings of Schottenheimer and Norton has not been officially announced by the Seahawks.
