Royals' trade Moss, Ryan for two pitchers

Royals' trade Moss, Ryan for two pitchers

Late Monday night, the Royals made a trade to send Brandon Moss and Ryan Buchter to the Oakland Athletics for pitchers Jesse Hahn and Heath Fillmyer.

Not to mentioned a bit of financial relief. He's owed $8.25 million, although the Royals are covering $3.25 million of that.

The Royals reportedly still have interest in re-signing free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer. He batted just.207 with 22 homers and 50 RBIs last season for Kansas City. A report that the Royals offered seven years and $147 million has been refuted, but team officials have been public about their interest in retaining Hosmer. That size of deal would make it hard for general manager Dayton Moore to simultaneously succeed in his desire to trim payroll, which ballooned over the past two seasons, unless he was able to shred financial obligations elsewhere. Regardless of whether or not Hosmer does return, we should all be happy that Moss will no longer be in the Royals line up, and the $8.25M contract that the Royals seemed nearly certain to pay is no longer a thing.

A few hours after announcing they would bring back one of their franchise core players on a one-year deal, the Royals made a move Monday evening that could clear space to bring back another. "I was very candid what we had to do, that it's simply not acceptable (to have a large payroll) in our market if you're going to run a team that's healthy and thriving longtime". Last season he went 11-5, pitching to the tune of a 3.49 ERA over 149 2/3 innings pitched for the AA Midland RockHounds. He went 1-0 with a 2.67 ERA in 29 appearances for the Royals. In having Moss' salary off the books, they have managed to slash payroll even further, without giving up that much depth. The Padres have been the only other public suitor for the 28-year-old, who is seeking a long-term contract in his first and possibly last foray into free agency.

The left-handed hitter will be making his return to Oakland, Moss last played for the Athletics through the 2012-2014 seasons. "I should be thankful that I have a job".
