Sensex off record highs, still up 76 points in late morning

Indian equity indices opened on a positive note crossing 34,000 mark, while Nifty was above 10,600 levels after Wall Street hits record high.

The BSE Sensex gained 88.90 points to end at 34,592.39, while the broader NSE Nifty finished at 10,681.25, up 30.05 points.

The Sensex hit an intraday high of 34,638.42 and a low of 34,342.16.

On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the wider Nifty50 edged higher by 30.05 points or 0.07 per cent to close at 10,681.25 points.

ICICI Bank Ltd rose 2.7 per cent, while Reliance Industries Ltd closed 1.2 per cent higher.


Notable losers were TCS 1.27 per cent, Bharti Airtel 0.82 per cent and Wipro 0.45 per cent.

New Delhi, Jan 12 Shares of TCS today fell by almost 2 per cent after the company said its net profit slipped 3.6 per cent in three months to December. In an unprecedented move, Justice Chelameswar and three other senior judges today held a press conference on various issues relating to the apex court judiciary.

As per provisional data, domestic institutional investors had bought shares worth Rs 770.02 crore, while FIIs sold equities to the tune of Rs 623.63 crore yesterday.

About 1,059 shares advanced against 272 declining shares on the BSE.

It surpassed its previous record closing of 10,651.20 hit yesterday.
