Weather models are tracking on the wetter side, which could lead to significant accumulation in the Piedmont. Areas along and to the east of I-77 could now see anywhere between 3 inches to over 6 inches of snow. "Please stay off the road unless you absolutely have to".

The storm's late arrival in the Triangle meant that roads were still dry in many places as the sun came up. "You could certainly run into issues if you decide to travel out and to the point where you might not be able to make it back".

A winter storm warning is in effect throughout central North Carolina until 9 p.m. today. He said the atmosphere is still rather warm - mid-30s - and as the precipitation falls through it, the rain will cool the atmosphere, which will help that precipitation turn into snow; however, he said pinpointing a time when that will happen is hard. Most counties will still be seeing snowfall until late in the afternoon. Snow fell in a wide band that stretched from southeastern Texas all the way to western MA.

The high temperature Wednesday will be in the mid-30s, so whatever snow falls is expected to stick, John and Chris say, so Wednesday morning, roadways could be slick.

Although precipitation will begin as a mix of rain/snow during Wednesday morning, a changeover to snow is likely with the highest accumulations expected north of a Darlington to Elizabethtown (N.C.) to Burgaw (N.C.) line, Pfaff wrote in the briefing.

This cold front is responsible for accumulating snow from east Texas and across portions of Louisiana all the way north east into New England.

Gov. Roy Cooper declared a statewide emergency Tuesday to allow him to deploy resources ahead of trouble.

Overnight lows will once again drop into the teens by Thursday morning.
