Spotify debuts 'Spotlight' format for podcasts, audiobooks and news

It has launched a new multimedia format, dubbed Spotlight, which sounds an terrible lot like visual podcasts. In what looks like an effort to get a leg up on competitors such as Apple, Spotify is expanding its offerings to include "visual podcasts" as part of a new format called "Spotlight".

"I know people are coming to Spotify to listen first, but we're starting to build something new, " Holt told Bloomberg in an interview.

Spotify has been working on building out its podcast business, and now offers a large catalog of shows (including our own Original Content, which you should definitely check out).

More specifically, Spotlight is being described by TechCrunch as a "new multimedia format that adds visual elements to podcasts". Spotify's Spotlights will include photos, videos, and text in addition to audio, and is rolling out to U.S. users first.

The first Spotlight-enabled podcasts focus on music, pop culture, politics, and sports, but other podcasts with more specialized topics should be hosting Spotlight content as soon as next month.

Spotlight will launch with content from the current Spotify media partners including BuzzFeed News, Cheddar, Crooked Media, Lenny Letter, Gimlet Media, Genius, The Minefield Girl, Refinery29 and Uninterrupted.

The Spotlight format won't really change the Spotify interface you're already familiar with, but rather, it will complement the listening experience. Only recently Spotify found itself facing more lawsuits, with artists and publishers demanding more than $1 billion for allegedly using songs without a license.
