Stokes, Gayle, Root among top foreign stars in IPL auction

Joe Root has thrown his hat into the ring and is among 1,122 players signing up to be a part of the IPL player auction scheduled to be held in Bangalore on January 27 and 28.

The usual suspects like Chris Gayle, Ben Stokes, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard etc., who are expected to fetch a huge sum at the auction, have registered for the mega auction.

Along with Root, it remains to be seen which franchises Chris Gayle and Ben Stokes head to.

Some 1,122 players will be on the auction block for the eight teams to bid for. He was one of the most sought-after players in the 2017 IPL auction.

Among Australian cricketers, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins top the list, being the most feared pacers in worldwide cricket.

Mitchell Starc, who ended his association with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the last IPL, too has entered the auction that also includes Chris Lynn, Pat Cummins, Dwayne Bravo, Carlos Brathwaite, Evin Lewis and Jason Holder.


About 282 overseas - 58 from Australia, 57 from South Africa, 39 each from Sri Lanka and West Indies, 30 from New Zealand and 26 from England have registered for the auction.

Three players from Associate nations are also included in the list of uncapped players. Also, from Bangladesh, there are 8 players while 13 and 7 is the number from Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

South African players listed for the auction include Hashim Amla, Faf du Plesis, Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel.

Lasith Malinga, whose form has taken a considerable dip in the a year ago or so, too will be part of the auction apart from his Sri Lanka mates Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella.

From the Blackcaps, skipper Kane Williamson, Colin Munro and Tom Latham will be the most important players in the auction. Jofra Archer still looks set to wait out naturalization with his stated ambition to play for England but right now he could be bound for an IPL spell after his brilliant displays in the Big Bash League.
