Toyota will add Amazon Alexa to pick out vehicles in 2018

Behind the scenes, the online retailer has aggressively orchestrated Alexa's rise by dramatically lowering the barrier for any company to add it to their products.

Vuzix is in the business of smart glasses for over 20 years. The device is created to present wearers with pertinent information directly in their field of view. Toyota announced the news at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"As Vuzix' next earnest step into consumer-grade augmented reality, the Vuzix Blade AR glasses will undoubtedly blaze the trail toward logical, approachable AR for everyone, with Amazon's Alexa digital assistant steering the wheel".

Soon the voice assistant Amazon Alexa will appear on thousands of computers under control of operating system Windows 10. So for those who do not have an account yet but are already planning to purchase the smart glasses, there is still time.

They'll be on the market later this year, and they will be pricey, about $1,000, but Travers says the hope is to eventually have them for sale for under $500.

The launch of the Alexa-enabled AR glasses would surely be a game changer in the industry. However, the Cupertino giant is not expected to release its high-tech spectacles until 2020. Amazon allows Alexa integration in third party products, and several tech manufacturers are using Alexa with their speakers and more, but this is the first time we're seeing Alexa breach another reality. Apple's AR smartglasses are supposed to come to market in 2020.

Toyota is not the first automaker to pair up with Amazon. However, Google Glass failed due to its expensive price and very complicated distribution structure.

Amazon hasn't said whether it will release its own branded smart glasses with Alexa, but Travers expects it to happen.
