Trump Private Lawyer Sues Buzzfeed Over Russian Dossier

CNN mentioned the existence of a possibly sketchy Russian dossier but stopped short of publishing the contents.

The suit against Fusion GPS and its co-founder Glenn Simpson was filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York, Cohen said.

The lawsuits were not immediately available on online court resources.

Two influential members of the Senate Judiciary committee have recommended that the Department of Justice open a criminal investigation of Christopher Steele, the former British spy who wrote the explosive dossier. It was presented to two successive presidents, and has been described in detail by news outlets around the world.

Mr. Steele also reported, in pages submitted just 11 days after a Russian lawyer handed Mr. Trump's aides what had been promised to be negative information on Hillary Clinton in Trump Tower, that "the Kremlin had been feeding Trump and his team valuable intelligence on his opponents, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton". Its interest to the public is obvious.

"This is not the first time Trump's personal lawyer has attacked the free press, and we look forward to defending our First Amendment rights in court", Buzzfeed spokesperson Matt Mittenthal said.

"Even though defendant BuzzFeed expressly acknowledged the unverified (and potentially unverifiable) nature of the dossier's allegations, defendant BuzzFeed published the un-redacted dossier and the article anyway - without attempting to determine the veracity of these reports with plaintiff himself", Cohen wrote in the lawsuit filed Tuesday night in NY state court. "Why waste time talking about something that's not legitimate", he said.

As the seriousness of the Russian Federation investigation has become clearer, the pro-Trump line has shifted from dismissing the dossier to stressing its role in the investigation: The dossier, some of Mr. Trump's defenders now say, played too big a part, given that a portion of Mr. Steele's funding came from political enemies of Mr. Trump, including the Democratic National Committee. "The Russia investigation, meanwhile, didn't turn out to be some minor side story but instead the central challenge to Mr. Trump's presidency". Cohen said he has never been to Prague and his passport shows no visits to the Czech Republic.

The document has become a focus of Republican-led investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

In his op-ed, Smith asserted that the dossier provided critical context for the American public to understand the actions of the various political players in the metastasizing investigation of Trump and his campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

Fusion GPS was originally hired to do research during the 2016 Republican primary campaign for a still unknown Republican donor who wanted to defeat Trump.

Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty to a charge of lying to the FBI and is cooperating with Mueller's investigation.
