Trump Says Won't Sign Immigration Bill Without Funding for Border Wall

Trump Says Won't Sign Immigration Bill Without Funding for Border Wall

During a televised meeting on Tuesday with Republican and Democratic lawmakers, Trump did not grasp that Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein was asking for an amnesty bill with no enforcement provisions. At the time, the White House gave some beneficiaries whose DACA statuses expire before the March date one final chance to renew their statuses. And I hope we can move forward with it.

In an interview with 17 News at Sunrise, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said he believes there is an appetite for DACA, and he has faith congress will pass legislation helping dreamers, while hoping for enhanced border security. DACA protected young undocumented immigrants who came to the USA as children from deportation. Next step - the senators need to convince President Trump to back the plan.

SCOTT DETROW, BYLINE: The three Democrats and three Republicans who have been hashing out a DACA agreement say they've got a compromise that deals with border security, with the people now protected by DACA and changes to the legal immigration process that President Trump has called for. Lindsey Graham and Cory Gardner, and Democratic Sens. We're told this blockage is in its early stages.

Bipartisan negotiations hit a snag after President Donald Trump on Thursday rejected an agreement reached by a group of six senators. That's probably going to be hard.

And finally, they are discussing eliminating the diversity visa lottery, which allows 50,000 slots for people to apply to emigrate to the USA, and giving those slots to immigrants already in the US with protected status, including those from El Salvador and Haiti whose protected status was eliminated. After that, priorities change. "This is the time but, day by day, they are blowing the one great opportunity they have".

Republicans like Pennsylvania Congressman Lou Barletta on the other. "We need the wall for stopping the drugs from pouring in".

"We'll do DACA", Trump said during the meeting.

DETROW: Of course the bill doesn't have to pass unanimously.

For that reason, immigrants are putting pressure on congressional lawmakers who have been working together to include an immigration plan that includes permanent, legal protections for certain immigrants as part of a larger spending bill package. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA).

"There's still a lot of uncertainty", said 23-year-old Pedro Villalobos who was brought to the United States illegally when he was two months old.

To be clear: This bill nearly certainly does not "need to get wider approval" to pass.

To RAICES, a nonprofit that works with immigrants, a federal judge's ruling that the Trump administration must keep the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program going as arguments go through the court is vindication, but not a victory.

The union is working with a number of progressive organizations on these ad campaign, including AFSCME, Hispanic Federation, APALA, NARAL, SEIU, Mi Familia Vota, United We Dream, National Immigrant Law Center and more. She resents the current political dynamic.

We spoke to an immigration lawyer in Salisbury about what this means for recipients. On the other side, the White House risks angering Trump's base if it grants a path to citizenship for the DREAMers. However, he doubts it could get passed by January 19, the deadline that Democrats have set as a target to pass an immigration plan as part of a deal to avoid a government shutdown. But as the president was being presented this deal, we're told by Democrats, he asked what countries are involved in this specifically.

One of the Democratic senators at the meeting, Dick Durbin of IL, confirmed on Twitter that Trump used the term "shithole".

The key player: It's the President. Durbin is blunt. He says he doesn't love making all the tradeoffs Republicans are demanding. It's what I'm forced to accept because of the realities.
