U.S. diplomat: Talks require long halt of weapons tests by North Korea

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un of North Korea", Trump said. The two nations have remained in a state of war and without diplomatic relations since the Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty. "I think you people are surprised".

"I don't want to comment on it", Trump told The Wall Street Journal after he was asked directly if he had spoken with Kim. "I just don't want to comment".

The president's remarks come after North and South Korea this week held their first talks in two years, and the North agreed to participate in the Winter Olympics in the South next month.

President Donald Trump's United Nations ambassador said Sunday the administration isn't changing its conditions regarding talks with North Korea amid growing tensions over the North's nuclear and missile programs. North Korea continues to challenge the US on the world stage.

One U.S. official said one option would be to bomb a North Korean missile or nuclear facility based on a "high confidence" intelligence assessment that North Korea planned another test.

Kim and President Donald Trump have engaged in an increasingly sharp war of words as North Korea's weapons programs advance, each of them belittling the other.

Kim has, in response, aggressively threatened to tame Trump with fire, calling Trump a "dotard" and "old lunatic".

Rhetoric on all sides may have moderated as a result of the first round of intra-Korean talks in more than two years on Tuesday, but US officials say hawks in President Donald Trump's administration, up to and including Trump himself, remain pessimistic that they will lead anywhere.

There's a significant amount of tunneling activity at North Korea's nuclear testing site, commercial satellite images show, suggesting the area is being prepped for a future nuclear test, according to a report from 38 North, a website dedicated to analyzing the rogue state.
