Vice President Pence will lead U.S. delegation to Olympics in South Korea

"I think you people are surprised", said the US President. But the risks were much greater this time, and at the next stand-off they will be greater still. The first factor is North Korea's rapid progress in its weapons programme. It's a marked difference from when South Korea last hosted the Olympics in 1988. A senior Ministry of Unification official said the matters of North Korean athlete eligibility and security "are apparently going to be discussed" at the January 20 meeting.

When it comes to the Winter Olympics, Abrahamian believes North Korea must have already conducted these preparations to be able to send such a large group of citizens to the games next month.

Very little is publicly known about Kim and Ryom's background or their lives in North Korea.

"It will help with ticket sales", said Pyeongchang Organising Committee spokesman Sung Baik-You.

"Given the mistrust and high bars set up by both North Korea and the USA, we will need to drive the experience from Pyeongchang when it's over, in a way that contributes to the opening of nuclear negotiations", Hwang told Reuters.

It was predictable, if disappointing, that North Korea refused this week to discuss its nuclear ambitions. For the Pyeongchang hockey competition, Roh said South Korea wouldn't cut home-grown players from its squad in favor of North Koreans. In short, let's not forget who we're dealing with.

Regarding employment and the minimum wage hike that went into effect this year, the president said measures to aid small business owners struggling with the wage increase will be implemented without fail.

I'm a strong advocate for diplomacy and negotiations.

China's imports from North Korea plunged in December to their lowest level in dollar terms since at least the start of 2014, with trade curbed by United Nations sanctions aimed at persuading Pyongyang to abandon its ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs. Another is that Pyongyang believes the United States really will carry them through - and that mistakes or misjudgments spark a war.

This breakthrough - and it was a breakthrough - came during rare talks between North and South Korea on the border between the two countries. It may take years to achieve this objective.

Seoul and Beijing agreed in October to move beyond a year-long stand-off over the deployment of a USA anti-missile system in South Korea, a dispute that has been devastating to South Korean businesses that rely on Chinese consumers.

Marcotte, who also coaches a team from South Korea, first spoke with Ryom and Kim early a year ago at the Asian Winter Games in Japan, congratulating them on their performance and improvement. If South Korea 'runs off the leash, ' said Daniel R. Russel, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in the Obama administration, to the New York Times, 'it will exacerbate tensions within the alliance.' ...

Such concerns have been raised in the past, but previous progressive governments have taken the view that putting up the Northern visitors did not amount to an infraction.
