7 mind-blowing facts of skier Ester Ledecka's stunning gold medal

With the newly crowned Olympic giant slalom winner's skis strapped to her feet, she had the run of her life.

Vonn followed up the tweetstorm against her with another one, saying that she'll get better. She has won world snowboarding championships in parallel giant slalom.

Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather took bronze. So Ledecka did. nothing.

Ledecka, you see, has made her name as a snowboarder. "I was looking at the board, thinking they are going to put up there a couple more seconds. I was looking. Now, it's weird".

And Vonn, one of the most successful skiers of all time, said she plans to avoid speaking out again for the time being after she was subjected to abuse on Twitter for her opinions.

Ledecka is a snowboarder by trade and has only competed in Super-G for two years.

International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams added: "None of us can control social media and the public has the right to say what they want but we would ask anyone to respect the athletes and respect their work".

Why not, indeed. Pechstein, who has won five gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes and set the Olympic record in the 5,000 since 2002, said she had been training well before Friday's 12 1/2-lap race. I was riding. I really don't know what happened. "I can find one word, and that is 'happy'".

For starters, it's exceedingly hard to overstate the difference between snowboarding and skiing - in function, for sure, but in style and mindset and upbringing as well. She is a four-time overall World Cup champion and will have another shot at a medal in the women's downhill race later in the Olympics.

And yet, skiing at the highest level is a relatively new development.

Lindsey Vonn is down but not out after losing in the Super-G race at the Winter Olympics.

"From the start, there were a lot of people who would say, 'You can not do both; you need to specialize, otherwise you will never reach a higher level, '" Ledecka said in a New York Times article. Ledecka blew them all away with a consistent run down the hill to post a winning time of one minute, 21.11 seconds.

"For me, the first reaction was like, 'Is this possible?'" Veith said.

Now comes her next challenge - dealing with the blindingly bright spotlight she never thought possible.

Marit Bjoergen equalled her compatriot Ole Einar Bjoerndalen as the most decorated athlete in Games history as she anchored Norway to victory in the 4x5km cross country relay.

Soccer legend Julie Foundy, a former star for the United States Women's National Team, voiced her frustration with the backlash at Vonn.

"I was not as prepared as the other girls that I would be at the ceremony", she said, "and I don't have no makeup".

HollywoodLifers, are you surprised that Esther won the Olympic gold? We take them all in and give them love.
