Barcelona asked to stop playing Messi

Notably, the Argentina star has only missed one league game for the Spanish side in the ongoing season.

Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia has requested that Barcelona limit Lionel Messi's playing time to make sure that he remains fully fit for this summer's World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

"I hope that all the players will have the same form that they are in at the moment", Tapia said, as reported by Marca.

For that reason, the president of the Argentine soccer federation (AFA) wants to make sure Messi is in top form by the time the tournament starts - no matter what it takes.

"Sergio Aguero's in rude health and Lionel Messi is always good". This is important for us, the executives, and the coaching staff to see the level that he [Messi] is at.

Tapia said he has had a word with the Barca talisman about keeping himself fresh for the World Cup, "We have spoken to Messi about taking care of himself and about playing less for Barcelona", he was quoted as saying in a report.

Indeed, Messi has played in all 23 La Liga matches for the Catalans this season.

They have also reached the final of Copa Del Rey, which will be played on April 21.

Meanwhile, Messi is also key to Barcelona's plans of winning the UEFA Champions League title after a two-year gap.

Antonio Conte's Chelsea face the games of their season as the Blues face Barcelona in the Champions League.

Argentina is hoping that Barcelona wins the title with a couple of games remaining to allow Messi to have a short break before heading to Russian Federation. "But it's a World Cup and it's seven finals, and we have to go step by step".
