"And you know what, I think America's just catching on", he said.

The tweet surprised some people as Pence directly tweeted Rippon at the start of the Olympic games.

Adam Rippon is quickly becoming a breakout star of the 2018 Winter Olympics - in his first-ever appearance at the Games, no less.

"You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?" Earlier this month, Rippon told the BBC that he doubts "somebody like me would be welcome there".

Rippon helped Team USA earn a bronze medal in the figure skating team competition this week but there was some controversy over the scoring as he placed lower in the judge's eyes than Russian skater Mikhail Kolyada and Canadian skater Patrick Chan (who both fell during their performances). He and the Vice President have been in a somewhat heated feud after reports of anti-gay sentiments from Pence circulated the news. "I wouldn't go out of my way to meet somebody like that".

"I personally don't have anything to say to Mike Pence", Rippon said.

At a press conference Tuesday, Rippon addressed the growing beef between him and the vice president.

"I have no problem about what I've said because I stand by it, but I think right now the Olympics are about Olympic competition", Rippon told CNN. "I've got so many messages from kids all over the country - I'm getting so emotional thinking about it - I think that's why it's so important".

He also further explained why he wanted to be recognized for his talent rather than his words.

"When I saw it I said 'Reese, finally, '" Rippon said. That I'm different, and I think on some level we all feel sort of different and when we are embraced for who we are and speaking our minds it's awesome. I got to where I am for working really hard.

After skating, Adam Rippon said he felt "great and fantastic", but also "ready for lunch and a good nap". And I hope that in the process of me sharing who I am with everyone that they can find their voice, too.
