Driver crashes into CT hospital, sets self on fire

A vehicle slammed into Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut, and caught fire on Thursday morning.

A Driver his auto into a CT hospital and after that set himself on fire, authorities said Thursday.

The man, who officials said was in his 20s, was taken to the burn center at Bridgeport Hospital.

Middletown Mayor Dan drew tweeted investigators believe it was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community. At the time, 30 patients and 20 staff individuals were inside the crisis office, and have since been exchanged to different parts of the hospital.

Drew says authorities will be providing updates.


Drew said out of an abundance of caution, police have been stationed at other municipal and education facilities in town for protection. "I said, 'that guy's on fire'".

Local authorities evacuated homes in the neighborhood where the driver lives and notified federal authorities.

The emergency room and nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution was the search continues, Drew said.

McKenna said authorities likely will be working at the crime scene through the day Thursday and people with appointments at the hospital should call to reschedule.

Hospital officials said the building sustained some damage, but that it wasn't significant.
