Ex-Redskin Kendall Fuller learns of his trade on Twitter

The deal spells the end for Kirk Cousins in Washington as it is clear now that the team will not put the franchise tag on him for a third-consecutive year and instead let him walk in free agency. He is scheduled to become a free agent in March. They could fit him onto the roster without having to shed the contracts of players who could be instrumental to the rebuilding process, and playing in a market like NY would also offer the face of the franchise further financial opportunities. That is 13 of the league's 32 teams.

What first comes to mind is the scenario in which the Cleveland Browns sign Cousins to be their new quarterback.

The Broncos spent a first round pick on Paxton Lynch just two years ago, but he has not developed in the way Denver hoped. As noted by Jason La Canfora, the Jets would seem to make some sense given their constant quarterback struggles the last few years, and the pressure to be the best team in NY always has a way of leading to some big offers that may or may not pay off for the Jets. He's the hot quarterback on the market right now. When John Elway wants something, he usually finds a way to get it. The Redskins acquired #Alex Smith in a trade, which virtually signaled their intention to part ways with Cousins this offseason.

Jets offensive chief Jeremy Bates is a Mike Shanahan disciple, and the Shanahan offense is flawless for Cousins. Whether the Browns or the Broncos sign him, that leaves one less team to draft a quarterback in the top six.

The Cardinals are an intriguing dark horse in the Cousins sweepstakes. He's been a great quarterback in that system. Twice selected as the New York State Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association, he is vice president of the Pro Football Writers of America. "Offense Wins Games! Defense Wins Championships!"

Cousins isn't as mobile as Bortles, but he does have the edge in rushing touchdowns.

The Jets are in need of a quarterback and have plenty of cash to spend this summer.

Kirk Cousins is looking for a team he can win with. That connection, and all the money the Jets have to spend, could be enough to see Cousins land in the Big Apple. There's also the fact that he's played two strong games against Minnesota over the last two years, beating the Vikings in 2016 and posting 30 points this year. They voiced support for Fuller, with many even saying privately after the season that he had the best year of anyone in the secondary.
