Frigid opening to 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang

The 23rd Winter Olympic Games opened amid a spectacular ceremony in South Korea's PyeongChang on Friday night.

Several US cyber security firms said on Monday that they had uncovered a computer virus dubbed "Olympic Destroyer" that was likely used in an attack on Friday's opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Games. Almost 170 Russian athletes were cleared by the IOC to compete in the 2018 events under a neutral flag as "Olympic athletes from Russia".

"In order to stop the further outbreak of the virus, we're quarantining patients beginning from the diagnosis to the treatment", stated KCDC Director Kim Hyun-jun, who added that January and February are known to be the "peak season" for the disease.

Speculation quickly suggested the outages were not accidental and at a Sunday evening news conference, Pyeongchang 2018 spokesperson Sung Baik-you confirmed they were caused by an attack. We know the cause of the problem but that kind of issues occurs frequently during the Games.

"Maintaining secure operations is our goal", said International Olympic Committee (IOC) spokesman Mark Adams.

On Saturday the Pyeongchang Organising Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Games (POCOG) said the attack the previous day had disrupted the functioning of the internet protocol televisions in the main press centre. Due to the ad hoc nature of cyber operations at the Olympics, the event is more vulnerable to hackers who exploit the lack of security discipline among personnel brought together from different organizations, said Hwang Jun-won, a professor of cyber security at South Korea's Hoseo Technical College.

Calls to the chief technical engineer at Pyeongchang for comment went unanswered.

However, North Korea's relationship with South Korea improved ahead of the games, with the two nations forming a combined team to compete.

"Of course, no evidence will be presented to the world".

In December, the International Olympic Committee banned Russian Federation for systematic doping in the 2014 games, but it's allowing 169 athletes to compete under a neutral Olympic flag and uniform. It is one we are dealing with.
