German shepherd beaten, shot while protecting teen during home invasion

Doug Jenkins told KCPQ that at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday two thieves broke into a home in the 1400 block of South 234th Street.

"A 16-year-old boy who was home alone said he believed someone was breaking in", Jenkins told KCPQ in Seattle.

He says around noon, he heard a noise and looked out a window. "He continued relaying everything he heard on the phone with dispatch". Mercado hid in an upstairs closet, while Rex charged downstairs to confront the suspects.

Javier's aunt, Susy Cadena, said both burglars hit the two-year-old dog as hard as they could when he barked and bit them. "If it wasn't for him, I feel like I wouldn't be standing here right now". The thieves beat the dog, leaving him badly injured.

"I started hearing barking, a lot of barking, and then one of the guys screamed, 'Get the dog!" "I heard one gunshot and several after that, and my dog just cried after every shot that hit him".

The burglars ran away when they heard police sirens. Javier and his family believe it's a miracle the dog survived. His dog had been taken to BluePearl, an emergency pet hospital, in Renton.

"My nephew was protected by his eternal friend until the last bit of strength he had in him to do what his unconditional, loving instinct told him to", Susy Cadena said on the GoFundMe page.

She continues to explain what happened during the incident, saying that the burglars first cruelly beat Rex before eventually shooting him.

Responding officers, which included a SWAT team, did find a smashed sliding door when they approached the home to inspect the scene, Kiro 7 reported.

A bloodied Rex then bolted back upstairs to check on the boy, who was still hiding in the closet, and it wasn't long before the burglars made it to the upstairs floor and trashed the bedrooms.

"Every little helps", she adds.

It doesn't appear that Mercado's family will have to pay much for Rex's surgery.

Julia Cadena, Mercado's mother, said she's happy that Rex was there to defend her son. "He's my four-legged angel that we had at our house".

'The bullet actually came all through the other side (of Rex's neck).
