Huawei guns for Apple with Mac-alike Matebook X

Display and webcam aside, the MateBook X Pro packs all the specs you'd expect to see in a high-end Windows laptop in 2018.

The competition to remove as much bezel from laptop displays is narrowing - the new Huawei MateBook X Pro stretches the screen to edges. However, while there are plenty of changes worth noting, it's where Huawei has stashed the camera that's likely to be remembered. Having more vertical screen space (for productivity) is not addressed by many 16:9 laptops on the market.

The touchscreen is 13.9 inches diagonal and 3000 x 2000 resolution for a Surface-style 3:2 aspect ratio.

The most remarkable feature is the display with thin bezels all around that yield a 91% display to body ratio, with the closest competitor at around 82%, according to Huawei.

There are two models - you can find their main specs below - and they'll be cheaper than the equivalent MacBook when they launch. The MateBook X Pro's keyboard is also very reminiscent of the one used by Apple, with large keys and minimal travel distance. The MateBook X Pro also houses a fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the power button. If you buy something featured, we may earn an affiliate commission which helps support our work. There's an anti-fingerprint coating, and an eye-comfort mode which tones down the blue light in the name of saving eye strain.

Despite that, it's a slimline machine. The end result is a device that makes the Apple MacBook Pro and its larger bezel look slightly dated. It also supports Thunderbolt 3, has two USB-C ports, a USB-A port and headphones socket, squeezed into a wedge shape that tapers from 16.6mm to 4.9mm, weighing 1.33kg. In fact, it's even lovelier than the original MateBook X's, with sandblasted grey and silver chassis colours, and shiny diamond-cut chamfered edges.

The trackpad is oversized, to cater to Windows 10 gestures, while inside Huawei says it focused on usable performance. The Huawei MateBook X Pro comes with a price tag of EURO 1,499 for the i5 model, while the Core i7 model with 8GB RAM is priced at EUR 1,699 and Core i7 model with 16GB RAM comes with a price tag of EUR 1899. 8 GB of system memory will be standard, and up to 16 GB available.

Storage 512GB SSD Dimensions 14.6mm at thickest point, 4.9mm at thinest. It's got Dolby Atmos-powered sound with quad speakers as well as quad mics on board.

The same is true of the glass-coated trackpad, which also borrows inspiration from the MacBook Pro. Indeed, the promise is nothing but the recycle bin on the desktop, though it'll be including a year's Office 365 subscription too.

The battery capacity is 57.4 kWh, Huawei claims six hours of usage from 30 minutes charge.

HUAWEI HAS kicked off the 2018 bunfight that is MWC with some surprise announcements (ok, so they've been leaked like insane, but hey) that have nothing to do with phones.
