Ilham Aliyev Calls for Snap Presidential Election

Aliyev has been in power since succeeding his father in 2003.

As it was announced previously, acting president Ilham Alyiev will be the candidate from the ruling party.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has sent a congratulatory letter to the participants of the 5th Congress of the Azerbaijani Trade Unions Confederation (AHIK). The surprise move angered opposition forces in Azerbaijan. These fears were fanned by Aliyev's decision to appoint his wife Mehriban Aliyeva as his first vice president past year.

"It [REAL] is staffed by lawyers, like Mammadov, and economists with ideas about how to modernize the economy and democratize the country", de Waal wrote.

Baku is facing possible sanctions from the Council of Europe stemming from Mammadov's imprisonment, which the European Court of Human Rights has ruled unjust. Ilham Aliyev has since changed the constitution, allowing himself to run for an unlimited number of terms and has also expanded the period in office from five years to seven. If that was in fact the aim, it failed, and Aliyev won with a comfortable 85 percent of the vote. According to Shahinoglu, the President believes that those countries will be preoccupied with their own elections in March and April.

Azerbaijan adopted a new constitution in 2016, and one provision is the ability to call extraordinary presidential elections. Azerbaijan's neighbor and enemy is transitioning into a parliamentary system and away from a top-heavy presidential regime, a situation that might discomfort Aliev, Altay Goyushov, an Azerbaijani historian, told EurasiaNet.org.

Opposition leaders slammed the decision to bring the vote forward. No other candidates have been nominated so far.
